The iconic mountain ranges on Calgary’s horizon inspired this competition proposal. The 3-acre site is adjacent to the train tracks between 9th and 11th Streets SW. Four towers varying in height from 28 to 47 stories are arranged on a 4-storey plinth. A substantial public plaza is located at the terminus of 10th Street SW. From there, a series of outdoor staircases flows upwards to interconnect landscaped terraces on each level. On the podium’s roof, a garden reserved for residents of the development overlooks the surrounding cityscape. A luminous patterned glass skin envelopes the podium, simultaneously revealing and disguising the wide variety of uses within. The tower profiles mimic craggy outcroppings of rock and enclose a wave-pattern of balconies that completes the allusion to mountain ranges.
